How Do I Connect Ranorex Studio 8.3.0 With TFS 2018

Post by katy-cameron » Fri Oct 12, 2018 3:09 pm

Yesterday I installed a trial version of Ranorex 8.3.0 for evaluation purposes, and was told that it could connect with TFS.

I've been trying to hook up to our in house TFS 2018 server, but I keep getting the following message:

Ranorex_Team_Foundation_Server_Error.png
I have Visual Studio 2017 installed, and it works fine on its own, but Ranorex seems to be completely unable to recognise its existence. The ability to connect to TFS one of the main reasons we've been considering Ranorex, so if it can't connect that would be a bit of an issue.

Also, it is probably best if you DON'T integrate TFS with Ranorex as the TFS integration library, MSSCCI, is VERY SLOW. This is a Microsoft issue, not a Ranorex issue, so there's nothing the Ranorex team can do. It appears the MSSCCI is not being maintained any longer by MS.

You're going to be much better off using the stand-alone TFS tools, or Visual Studio, for TFS manipulation.

Also, you would be much better off using Git instead of TF Version Control. Even MS is moving to Git. TFVC will likely not be receiving many more upgrades, especially since you can use Git as the version control system inside TFS.
Shortcuts usually aren't...

Thank you. much as I would love to move to GIT and abandon TFS, unfortuantely I'm not the one that makes those decisions (I am the one that has to manage TFS while we have it though, but that's by the by) If it doesn't integrate, I'll just need to report that back in the evaluation so that those who do make those decisions can actually decide

But there is no need to abandon TFS at all! I'm happily using Ranorex and TFS. Just instead of TFS integration in Ranorex Studio, I'm using standalone MS TeamExplorer (a free MS app to work with TFS). TFS Integration in Ranorex only adds some TFS icons to project view tree and makes the Ranorex noticeably slower over the time (due to a problem with c...y MSSCCI implementation, which is completely MS's fault). There is nothing to worry about using standalone Team Explorer or Visual Studio to checkin/checkout operations.
