I'm evaluating Ranorex but I've run into a problem where my mouse cursor disappears when trying to record anything in IE9 or Firefox 8.0.1. After starting the recording, the browser window is properly launched and the cursor changes to have a red dot, but as soon as I move the mouse, the cursor disappears and the browser window minimizes. I can't get the mouse cursor back until I completely shutdown Ranorex, as there doesn't seem to be a way to stop recording using the keyboard alone. I've changed and updated the mouse drivers to see if that had any effect, but it didn't. I'm running Win7 32bit SP1. It's Ranorex Studio 3.1.2.14812, which I downloaded today. Obviously, I'm not going to get anywhere with this product unless this problem is fixed.

I discovered what's causing the problem. Ranorex doesn't like when the display is set to a non-standard DPI setting. The developers should know to test for high res screens, which have become standard these days, and if you use the standard DPI setting, then the text and controls are so small that they can barely be read. Therefore, it's very common to use a higher DPI setting so that you can increase the size of text even when using high res LCD panel. My LCD is 1600x1200, which is rather modest compared to the standard 1920x1080 and panels at 2560x1600 are available.

I tried to reproduce the issue but I wasn't able to. I did it on a Virtual Box with 131 DPI and when I started a Recording the mouse pointer never disappears while I was trying to record a few steps. Also the minimize of the browser never occurred.

• Did you try this on another machine?
• Does this occur only on this special machine?
• Did you install all updates of Windows?
• Do you have any special settings on this machine?

No, I tried this on one machine. I'm only able try it on one machine, as I don't have another machine for the purposes of evaluating software. Yes, all windows updates are installed. I believe all installations are special in various regards, but this one isn't unusual in any way. I'm a tech and software engineer with 30+ years of experience, including certification as an MCSE and MCSD. It was a clean install of Window 7 x32 with all updates, IE9, Visual Studio Ultimate 2010, and Office 2010. Virtual Machines aren't a good choice for testing these kinds of problems, since all of the hardware has been virtualized away. The graphics card is a GEforce 8800 GTS 512 with driver version 8.17.12.7533 which was published in May of 2011. I'll update the driver to see what happens, since there is a slightly newer driver published about a month ago.

I hit the same issue yesterday. The strange thing is that this was working previously, then suddenly stopped.

To reproduce on 64 bit Windows 7:
In Control Panel\All Control Panel Items, click on Display
In the section titled "Make it easier to read what's on your screen", click on Larger - 150%
Click Apply
Log off, then log on again
Start Ranorex and try recording.

Reverting the "Larger" setting back to Smaller, then allows Ranorex to record again.

Obviously, this needs fixing, but it is curious that this suddenly stopped working. My existing recordings were not recorded using Smaller.
