I'm puzzled by this design, as I can see no obvious reason why SmartFolder names must be unique across the entire Suite.

I understand why Test Case Names should be unique, but SmartFolders should at the very least only require uniqueness if they don't share the same parent; if two SmartFolders have different parents, then they should be allowed to have the same name.

Am I missing something?

No, you don't miss anything I too raised this question while evaluating v 7. At the moment, it's just like that. But as far as I know, Ranorex folks are investigating the possibility to make the smartfolder (testcase) names non-unique. I think such option would be very nice for TestCases as well?

Yeah, I see no reason why TestCases shouldn't have that option as well.
