Ranorex vs Microsoft Test (CodedUI)

Hello,

Does anyone have a comparison data sheet that I can provide to the purse string holders to further assist in making the decision to purchase Ranorex?

We have an MSDN license and they're going to want to know why we shouldn't be using it. I can provide plenty of personal reasons, but usually data comparison sheets help.

Thanks,

Jason

Hi,

Sorry but we have no comparison sheet for Ranorex vs Microsoft Test. I can post you some bullet points about Ranorex if you want. I also move this topic to automation discussion. Maybe a few other customers can give you feedback why Ranorex is the better tool.
Which type of application do you want to test with Ranorex?

Peter

Hi Peter,

It's against .Net applications (c#).

Thanks,

Jason

I too would be interested in seeing a list of features that are not offered by VS. A comparison sheet would also help my report :)

Edit: Also, could you compare with TestComplete 8?

I have always found making a comparison sheet myself is the best way to go about it, that way you are only comparing features that matter to your test set up and technologies under test.

Just write down all the features, technologies etc that you require, download trials of each tool and mark down how well they performed.

Hi,

Here is a comparison for Ranorex vs. Test Complete 8:

Please find the major points which have to be considered when comparing Ranorex with TestComplete below:
  • Ranorex does not only support more UI technologies but also provide support for mixed applications (.NET with Flash/Flex, .NET WinForms in a web application, VB6.0 hosting a Java Applet, etc.).
  • Object identification is done with RanoreXPath which is flexible to use and a lot more robust against changes in the UI. The RanoreXPath is used to navigate through the structure of the application’s user interface and allows combining different attributes of a UI element for object identification. For a maximum of flexibility RanoreXPath also supports regular expressions and the use of variables for data driven localization.
  • A Ranorex Studio test project is based on the MS Visual Studio project file format. This does not mean that everyone needs to have scripting skills to setup automated test projects. The advantage here is that all Ranorex tools within Ranorex Studio generate pure C# or VB.NET code. New Ranorex code modules are easy to setup, but at same time allow to use (if necessary) other classes apart from Ranorex library (e.g. MS .NET Framework). Simply refer other DLLs or components to combine legacy test automation code with Ranorex (maybe you already have something written in C#, VB.NET or C++).
  • Based on the .NET project file format Ranorex test projects are compiled into an executable file, which represents the test suite with all test cases. Using the command line options offers again full flexibility to parameterize a test execution in runtime environments.
  • Test execution on other machines can be done with the Ranorex Runtime license. This license is much cheaper than a Ranorex Premium Edition
  • Supported technologies:
    • Client Side
      • .NET WinForms
      • .NET WPF
      • .NET Silverlight
      • General support for .NET 3rd party controls like Infragistics, DevExpress, Janus, ComponentOne, etc.
      • Adobe AIR
      • Java Swing / AWT / SWT
      • Delphi
      • VB 6.0
      • Qt
    • Web Applications
      • ASP.NET
      • Adobe Flash/Flex
      • Java Script
      • Java Applets
      • Ajax
      • HTML / HTML5
      • GWT
    • Browser Support
      • E 6.0 – IE 9.X
      • FireFox 3.5
      • FireFox 4/5/6/7 are supported with Ranorex versions > 3.1
      • Google Chrome supported with Ranorex versions > 3.2
But as Scott already suggested. The best way to compare a tool is to try it out by your own if it fits in your needs.

Peter

Hi,

Sorry but we have no feature matrix. The best way to evaluate a tool is to try it on your Unit Under Test. If you want, we support you in your evaluation process by looking at your created snapshots, recordings and we tell you if you are able to do all your tasks with Ranorex.

Peter, in your previous response you said:"...If you want, we support you in your evaluation process by looking at your created snapshots, recordings and we tell you if you are able to do all your tasks with Ranorex."
That's exactly what we need at the moment. We are currently actively searching for an automation testing framework for our company's Web application. So far, Ranorex has shown some good features that we are looking for (e.g., support for applets, flash/flex, etc.). In general, what do we need to present to Ranorex support to see if Ranorex would be able to do our tasks. What kind of snapshots, recordings, etc. should we prepare? Please advise. Thanks.
