What does the Runtime Floating license include?

Post by TonyB » Tue Aug 11, 2015 10:31 pm

Hi there

I am trying to get our company to purchase Ranorex, but the powers that be are refusing as it is not clearly outlined what the licenses include.

Looking at getting the Runtime Floating license. However, by the looks of the Editions & Pricing page, it doesn't include the ability to test Mobile? Is this correct?

Also, does this license give the user the ability to use Ranorex Spy?

Thanks

Tony

Hi Tony,

Basically, there are two types of licenses. The Ranorex Runtime License is designed to run Ranorex tests using the Test Suite Runner, via command line or by double-clicking the *.exe file. This type of license is also needed if you want to execute your tests using a CI system like Bamboo or Jenkins.
It is not possible to start Ranorex Studio, Ranorex Spy or Ranorex Recorder using a Runtime license and this license is only available in the floating model.

In order to run all Ranorex Tools like Studio, Spy, Standalone Recorder, etc. you will need a Ranorex Premium License. Additionally, this license is also required if you want to write your Tests using Visual Studio.
This license comes with Floating or Node Locked option.

A Node-Locked License is bound to one machine and user account(s).
It is also not allowed to install Node-Locked licenses on any virtualized operating systems, cloud or terminal server environment.

A Floating License has to be installed on the Ranorex License Manager Tool. The license can be leased by a client machine from this manager. If the license is not needed any more on the client (Ranorex Studio/Spy/Recorder is closed, Ranorex test has finished) the license will be released and can be used by another machine. A floating license can only be used on ONE machine at the same time.

Concerning mobile testing

Both license types (runtime / premium) do include mobile testing, whereby the premium is also necessary for recording and maintaining your test and the runtime is for executing the tests.

Please also note

According to our EULA, one license is needed per device for test execution

Extract from EULA (2015-08-12)
2.1.2 Node-Locked License. Under the terms of a Node-Locked license, Licensee may install and use Licensor’s software on a specified machine. The license is bound to one or multiple machines and user account(s) allowing the use of Licensor's software exclusively on these physical machines. The maximum number of physical machines, including the number of mobile devices used for concurrent mobile test execution, is limited to the number of users provided with the Order. Licensee may not install Node-Locked licenses on any virtualized operating systems, cloud or terminal server environment.

2.1.3 Floating License. Under the terms of a Floating license, Licensee may install Licensor’s software on an unlimited number of physical or virtual instances within a private network. The maximum number of physical or virtual instances and users accessing the software at the same time, including the number of mobile devices used for concurrent mobile test execution, is limited to the number of concurrent users provided with the Order. Licensor provides a license server application used to install, manage and share the licenses within a private network.
Kind regards,
Markus (S)
